Volleyball Falls 3-1 To High Point

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell to High Point 3-1 (17-25, 19-25, 25-23, 17-25), ending its 7-0 undefeated home mark on Friday, Oct. 15 at Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers move to 10-11 overall and 3-4 in the Big South while the Panthers improve to 12-10 and 7-1 in the league.

Senior Chelsy Kimes had a match-high 17 kills and recorded her 11th double-double of the season, adding 17 digs. Erika Lightsey recorded nine kills and 10 digs while Kelsie Mauck dished out 38 assists. Megan Bickford posted four blocks, including two solo blocks and registered two service aces.

The Panthers had three players register double-digit kills with Megan Smith leading the squad with 15 kills and adding seven service aces. Julie Hershkowitz finished with a match-high 18 digs and Maddie Simpson dished out 45 assists on the night. Audie Gonzalez chipped in five service aces and Michelle Chakirelis posted two blocks.

In the first set, High Point went out to an early 4-1 lead and never looked back as the Panthers took the set 25-17. Coastal came to within two at 16-14, but a 9-3 Panther run finished out the set. Smith led High Point with five kills and two service aces while Kimes recorded three kills and six digs for the Chants.

Kimes came alive for Coastal in the second set, tallying seven kills, but it was not enough as High Point took a 2-0 match lead, winning the second set 25-19. The Panthers started with a 6-0 lead and continued the momentum throughout the set. At 20-11, Coastal tried to get its offense started, going on a 7-3 run, but the rally was stopped short with kills by Gonzalez and Courtney Johnk.

The third set was close between the two teams with five ties and three lead changes. Coastal started strong, going out to a 10-4 lead. High Point gradually came back to tie the set at 19-all as both teams went back and forth. At 23-all, the Chants took the final lead on a kill by Bickford. An attack error by the Panthers ended the set at 25-23, forcing a fourth set. Both Lightsey and Kimes registered four kills a piece for Coastal and Smith posted four kills to lead High Point.

In the fourth set, the Panthers came out strong, taking an early 10-2 lead. The Chanticleer tried to get their offense started, but could not build a comeback as High Point won the set 25-17. Stephanie Wallin and Smith each tallied three kills while Smith and Gonzalez added two service aces a piece. Kimes led the Chants will three kills in the set and Bickford posted two blocks.

The Chanticleers return to the court tomorrow to face Radford at 2 p.m.

High Point's next match will be Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. against Liberty.
