CONWAY, S.C.-The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team defeated Presbyterian College 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-22), moving them to 3-1 in Big South play and 10-8 on the season. The Blue Hose fall to 1-2 in the Big South and 8-9 on the season. The Chanticleers played their first four-set home match since their 3-2 victory over USC Upstate on September 11, extending their home win streak to 7-0.
On defense, freshman Lindsay Gill registered a match-high 19 digs while freshman Meghan Laffin posted six blocks. Offensively, senior Chelsy Kimes tallied a match-high 15 kills. Junior Erika Lightsey recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Presbyterian's Presley Mabrey also recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Senior Kilee Ruppe had a match-high 42 assists.
Set one saw a close match-up to start with two ties, but a 9-3 run by the Blue Hose put the game out of reach for the Chanticleers. Coastal would battle back to within four, but fell 25-19. Kimes and Laffin each posted four kills in the set while freshman Lauren Alejo and junior Kelsie Mauck each tallied six digs. Presbyterian's Mabrey recorded seven kills, including a service ace and Ruppe registered 12 assists during the set.
The Chanticleers came out strong during the second set, going on a 14-5 run and cruised to a 25-14 victory. Coastal Carolina held Presbyterian to a team attack percentage of .030 compared to its .310 hitting percentage. Alejo added five digs to her afternoon total, while contributing six assists and three service aces. Lightsey totaled five kills for the Chanticleers. Ruppe added six of her 42 assists on the day and Mabrey tallied five digs.
Coastal Carolina took set three 25-18, taking a 2-1 lead in the match. Kimes tallied four kills and senior Amanda Russell followed close behind with three. Mauck posted six assists while Alejo added four. Freshman Lindsay Gill and Lightsey had five and four digs, respectively. Ruppe recorded all of Presbyterian's 15 assists during the set while senior Ashley Dunlap registered six digs. Mabrey finished with six kills.
In the fourth set of the match, Coastal Carolina took the set win to win the match. Coastal led by as many as eight points, but the Blue Hose battled back to within two in the final moments of the set at 23-21. Kimes gave the Chants a three point lead with a kill, but Presbyterian's Andrea Barman answered with a kill of her own, putting the Blue Hose down by two at 24-22. Laffin ended the match with a kill, putting the set away 25-22. Alejo recorded six assists while Mauck followed closely behind with five. Gill registered eight more digs for the day, while Kimes and Lightsey posted four and three kills, respectively. Ruppe added nine more assists for the day.
Coastal Carolina will be on the road Tuesday, October 5 to take on the Winthrop Eagles in conference play. The match is set to start at 6pm.
Presbyterian heads home to play UNC Asheville in conference play on Tuesday, October 5 at 7pm.
