CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team downed UNC Asheville 3-1 (25-12, 25-14, 23-25, 25-17) at Kimbel Arena on Saturday, Oct. 23 in a rematch of the earlier meeting where the Bulldogs won 3-2. The Chanticleers improve to 12-12 overall and 5-4 in the Big South while the Bulldogs fall to 12-10 and 5-4 in the league.

Senior Chelsy Kimes recorded her 14th double-double of the season, finishing with 18 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Meghan Laffin added 12 kills and posted three blocks while Megan Bickford tallied 10 kills. Laffin and Kelsie Mauck combined for seven service aces for the Chants and Lindsay Gill registered 21 digs.

For the Bulldogs, Cindi Miller had a match-high 19 kills and added 13 digs. Kelsey Benorden registered eight kills and tied Alex Stewart with 17 digs on the night. Rachel Guinane dished out 27 assists and posted two blocks.

The Chanticleers opened the match with a 25-12 first set win. At 4-3, Coastal went on an 11-2 run to give the squad 15-5 lead and put the set out of reach for the Bulldogs. Lightsey finished the set with four kills for the Chants while Bickford, Kimes and Laffin added three kills a piece.

In the second set, Coastal went out to an early 8-4 lead. The Bulldogs tried to get a rally going, but a 9-2 run gave the Chants a 19-7 advantage. UNC Asheville scored seven more points, before Coastal won the set 25-14 to take a 2-0 match lead. The Bulldogs were held to a .036 team attack percentage and only five kills in the set compared to the Chanticleer's .316 attack percentage and 15 kills. Kimes had a set-high seven kills while Bickford added four to her total.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the third set, winning the set 25-23. Both teams stayed close until at 11-all UNC Asheville went on a 6-2 run, taking the lead for the final time of the set. Coastal tried to battle back, getting to within two at 23-21, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs took the set. UNC Asheville finished with a .350 hitting percentage as Miller tallied seven kills.

In the fourth set, the Chants went out to a 6-1 lead, but the Bulldogs gradually came back to tie the set at 8-all. Following eight ties and four lead changes, Coastal took its final lead at 16-15 and went on a 6-0 run to put the Chanticleers ahead 23-15 with Lauren Alejo serving eight straight points. The lead was too much for UNC Asheville to overcome and Coastal won the set 25-17. Laffin came alive for Coastal, registering five kills and a solo block.

The Chanticleers close out their five-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 26 against Winthrop at 6 p.m. The match will be the team's annual Dig Pink match and will feature free t-shirts and a silent auction with golf packages, gift certificates to local businesses and other donated items.
