Final Stats

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 20-25) to Liberty at the Vines Center on Saturday, Oct. 9 in a rematch of the 2009 Big South Championship match. The Chanticleers fall to 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the Big South while Liberty improves to 15-7 and 6-1 in the conference.

Senior Chelsy Kimes had a match-high 14 kills and recorded her 10th double-double with 11 digs. Erika Lightsey and Meghan Laffin each added eight kills a piece and Kelsie Mauch dished out 36 assists. Laffin also posted six total blocks to lead the team, while Lindsay Gill tallied 15 digs.

The Chanticleers got off to a good start in the first set, going out to an early 6-2 lead. The Lady Flames got to within one at 8-7, but the Chants went on a 6-3 run to put them down by four at 14-10. Coastal kept things rolling and at 21-18, the Chanticleers finished the set on a 4-1 run, winning 25-19. Amanda Russell led Coastal with four kills while Laffin posted three blocks.

In the second set, Coastal took an early lead and held it until Liberty gradually came back to tie the set at 17-all. Following the tie, the Lady Flames took the final lead of the set and Coastal was held to just two points as Liberty tied the match at 1-all with a 25-19 win. Kimes recorded a set-high five kills while Lightsey registered five digs for the Chants.

The third set was a battle between the teams, forcing six ties and four lead changes before Liberty took the set with a 25-21 victory. Kimes added another three kills and Megan Bickford posted three blocks.

In a must win situation for Coastal, the Chants found themselves down 3-0 early in the fourth set and despite two ties could never take the lead as Liberty went on to win the set 25-20. The Chanticleers came to within one numerous times, but at 13-12, the Lady Flames went on a 5-2 run to put the set out of reach at 18-14. Lightsey led the set with four kills, but Liberty's Kendle Rollins and Karyl Bacon came alive each registering five kills a piece.

Both teams were evenly matched with neither team finishing with team attack percentage under .200. Liberty took the edge, hitting .159 compared to Coastal's .130.

The Chanticleers return home for a five-match homestand beginning with High Point on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
