CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Five members of the Coastal Carolina men's soccer team were named to All-Big South Postseason Teams the conference office announced Wednesday.
Senior Ross Kelly was one of four midfielders named to the All-Big South first team, while fellow senior Alex Russell was tabbed as one of four defenders named to the squad to go along with a selection to the All-Academic Team.
Freshman Justin Portillo earned All-Big South second team accolades as a midfielder and was selected to the Big South All-Freshman Team. Junior keeper Scott Angevine was an at-large selection to the second team, while Pedro Ribeiro joined Portillo on the All-Freshman team.
Kelly has started all 18 games for the Chanticleers this season and ended the regular season with seven points on three goals and one assist. His most memorable goal of the season came Sept. 12 when he netted the golden goal with just seconds left in double overtime to lift Coastal to a 1-0 win over Wofford. Ross' selection is the second time in his career he was tabbed All-Big South, earning the honor as a sophomore in 2008.
Russell also drew starts in all 18 games this season and has helped anchor one of the top defensive units in the Big South. The Coastal defense allowed just 22 goals this season and ranks third in the Big South in goals against average. The Chants also turned in six shutouts to rank third in the conference. Offensively, Russell picked up one point on one assist. It's the second time in his career that he was named to the All-Big South first team.
Portillo ranks third on the team with nine points after scoring two goals and collecting five assists. Portillo, who is tied for sixth in the Big South in assists, delivered the game-winning helper against Wofford when his corner kick found the head of Kelly. The New Orleans, La., native also had the game-winning assist in a 1-0 victory over No. 19 UNC Wilmington.
Angevine ended the regular season third in the Big South with a 1.15 goals against average and a 0.80 mark against Big South foes. The Kansas City, Kan., native recorded five shutouts during the regular season and only allowed a total of seven goals in eight league games. Angevine was tabbed to the All-Big South first team a season ago.
Ribeiro ended the regular season tied for first on the team with 11 points apiece. Riberio paced the team with five goals and currently stands tied for eighth in the Big South. The Belo Horizonte, Brazil, native recorded four game-winning goals thus far and is tied for first in the league in that category.
