RADFORD, Va. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25) in four tough sets to Radford on Friday, Nov. 12 at the Dedmon Center. The Chanticleers fall to 14-16 overall and 7-8 in the Big South while the Highlanders improve to 11-20 and 5-11 in the league.
Chelsy Kimes finished the match with 13 kills and 21 digs. Lauren Alejo dished out 35 assists on the night while Meghan Laffin posted five blocks and registered 11 kills. Kimes and Laffin each recorded two service aces while Lindsay Gill tallied 20 digs.
The first set saw 11 ties and seven lead changes before Radford took the first set 25-23. Both teams stayed close until the Highlanders went on a 4-2 run, putting them ahead 19-15. Coastal tried to build a comeback, but came up short as Laura Waddell led the Highlanders with four kills in the set.
The second set saw five early ties before Radford went on a 5-0 run to put the Highlanders ahead 13-8. Coastal was down by as much as six before the Chants went on 4-0 run, but a kill by Megan McWhorter ended the set. McWhorter led Radford with three kills while Coastal's Megan Bickford recorded three kills.
The third set was just like the first two with Coastal coming out on top 25-23 after 13 ties and seven lead changes. Both teams went back and forth before the Chants took the final lead at 24-23 on a Radford attack error. Coastal won the set on a kill by Bickford. Kimes and Laffin each recorded four kills.
Coastal took an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set, but the Highlanders gradually came back to tie the set at 19-all. After four late ties, Radford took the final lead at 24-23 and a Chanticleer attack error ended the match. McWhorter finished with eight kills to lead the Highlanders to the match win.
Chanticleers close out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 13 at High Point for a 2 p.m. match up.
