Volleyball Falls In Five At High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - In the final match of the regular season, the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 19-25, 11-15) decision at High Point on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Millis Center. The Chanticleers fall to 14-17 overall and 7-9 in the Big South while the Panthers improve to 18-12 and 12-3 in the league.

Chelsy Kimes had a team-high 16 kills and recorded her 18th double-double of the season, adding 20 digs. Meghan Laffin recorded 10 kills on the day and posted three blocks while adding two service aces for the Chants. Five Chanticleers registered double digit digs with Lindsay Gill tallying 29.

Coastal took an early 11-5 lead in the first set, but a 5-0 run put the Panthers back in the set and down by one at 11-10. Both teams stayed close and after six ties, the Chants took the lead for the final time at 22-21 and finished the set on a 3-1 run. Coastal went up 1-0 after the 25-22 set win. Kimes finished with a team-high five kills in the set while High Point's Audie Gonzalez registered five kills.

The Panthers went ahead 7-3 early in the second set, but Coastal came to within two, 9-7, until High Point went on an 8-2 run to put the set out of reach. High Point cruised to a 25-17 win and evened the match at 1-all. Gonzalez and Megan Smith led the Panthers with four kills apiece.

In the third set, Coastal took a 7-2 lead and held the Panthers to just 16 points. At 10-7, the Chanticleers went on a 12-3 run to put them ahead 22-10 and sailed to a 25-16 win, giving Coastal a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The fourth set saw seven ties before High Point took the final lead at 10-9. Laffin registered four kills for the Chants, but the Panthers would go on to win the set 25-19. Four High Point players contributed to the offense with two kills apiece.

In the deciding set, the Panthers started with a 3-0 lead and held off the Chanticleers for most of the set. Coastal gradually came back to tie the set at 11-all, but it was not enough as High Point finished the set on a 4-0 run to win the match.

The Chanticleers will head to the Big South Tournament, hosted by Winthrop Nov. 18-20.
