CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-11) to Charleston Southern on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at the CSU Field House. The Chanticleers fall to 14-14 overall and 7-6 in the Big South, while the Buccaneers improve to 11-17 and 5-8 in the league.
Senior Chelsy Kimes finished with 11 kills on the night while Erika Lightsey added six kills. Freshman Lauren Alejo dished out 12 assists and Lindsay Gill registered seven digs. Megan Laffin posted two blocks and Kimes recorded two service aces for the Chants.
Both teams battled for most of the first set with the Buccaneers winning 25-22 after 13 ties and seven lead changes. Coastal took a one point lead early in the set, but a 3-0 CSU run put the Bucs ahead by two. The Chants battled back to take the lead and went ahead by as much as three at 13-10. The final tie of the set came at 20-all and following the tie, Charleston Southern went on a 4-0 run to put them at set point. Coastal tried to build a comeback, but a kill by Amberle Trinder ended the set.
Coastal took an early 6-3 lead in the second set, but a 4-0 run by the Bucs gave CSU a 7-6 lead. The Chants tied the set for the final time at 7-all on a kill by Amanda Russell, but it was not enough as the Buccaneers answered with a 5-1 run to put the set out of reach. Coastal came within one at 12-11, but a 12-4 Charleston Southern run put the Bucs at set point. The Chants won two more points before CSU took the set at 25-17 and went up 2-0 in the match.
The third set saw three early ties before Charleston Southern went on a 10-2 run to put the Bucs ahead 13-5. Coastal never found its offense as the Buccaneers cruised to a 25-11 set victory and match win.
The Chanticleers return home for their final home match of the 2010 season on Saturday, Nov. 6, hosting Liberty at 2 p.m. It will be Senior Day and the four Coastal seniors will be recognized prior to the match.
