CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team tamed the Coker Cobras to the tune of 78-25 in non-conference action on Sunday, Nov. 28 to pick up its fourth win on the season.
The victory improves the Chants record to 4-2 while Coker falls to 0-5 on the season. With the win, Coastal continued its streak of defeating the Cobras each season since the Chants inaugural campaign of 1974-75.
The Chanticleers impressed on the court against Coker from the beginning as the Katie White knocked the opening tip back to Taylor Epley and the Chants never looked back. Coastal got on the scoreboard early and often as the Chants finished 30-of-63 from the field for a season-high 47.6 percent including 50 percent in the second half. Thirteen of the Chants fourteen roster players scored points in the contest.
Olivia Irick led all scorers with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. Lauren Grochowski finished with a season high 10 points including a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Freshman Katelyn Connor scored her first points of the season as she finished with a near double-double at nine points and nine rebounds. Taylor Epley set a new career-high with nine rebounds to go along with her six points.
On the defensive end of the floor, Coastal forced 24 turnovers while pulling down 41 rebounds. Coastal was able to hold the Cobras without a field goal from the 5:42 mark of the first half until the 12:43 mark of the second. During that stretch, Coastal blew open the game with a 32-3 scoring run.
The Chants finished with 55 total boards in the contest and is the second game this season that featured 50 plus rebounds.
The Chanticleers will travel to Evansville, Ind. to take part in the 2010 Aces Winter Classic tournament hosted by the University of Evansville. Coastal will play Mid-American Conference member Central Michigan on Friday, Dec. 3 at 5 p.m.
