CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team defeated the Converse Valkyries 86-33 in non-conference action on Sunday, Dec. 12 to pick up its fifth win on the season.
The victory improves the Chants record to 5-4 while Converse falls to 0-8 on the season. With the win, Coastal improves to 7-0 all-time against the Valkyries and 49-19 against Conference Carolinas member institutions.
The Chanticleers impressed on the court against Converse from the opening tip. The Chants jumped on the scoreboard early as Shanika Maddox scored on the opening possession as she slashed toward the basket and converted an easy layup. The Chants then stole an errant inbounds pass by Converse and Olivia Irick converted another layup for the first of her 12 points in game. Coastal then used a 33-4 run over the opening 11 minutes to put the game out of reach.
The Chanticleers finished the game shooting a season-high 51.6 percent from the field and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Irick and Lauren Grochowski led all scorers with 12 points. Irick finished 5-of-8 from the field and pulled down two rebounds in her 16 minutes of play. Grochowski's 12 points came on 3-of-5 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line was a season-high and one off her career-high of 13. Grochowski also finished with a career-high tying two rejections. Point guard Kira Carter joined Irick and Grochowski in double figures as she contributed a career-high tying 11 points on 4-of-7 from the field including two baskets from long range. Taylor Epley established a new career-high with nine points in the contest.
On the defensive end of the floor, Coastal forced 28 turnovers while pulling down 31 rebounds. The Chants were able to hold the Valkyries scoreless from the 18:33 mark until 11:02 to play in the opening half. During that stretch, Coastal built an insurmountable 26 point lead.
The Chants finished with 45 total boards in the contest and is the eighth game this season that featured 40 plus rebounds.
Prior to the game, director of athletics, Hunter Yurachek, presented senior Sydnei Moss a game ball to commemorate her achievement of becoming just the 11th player in Coastal Carolina history to eclipse the 1,000 career points milestone.
The Chanticleers will be back on the hardwood of Kimbel Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 15 to take on Colonial Athletic Association member UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
