CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina senior defender Alex Russell has been selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Atlantic Region Second Team following a season that saw the Chants feature one of the top defenses in the Big South.
Russell helped Coastal Carolina to a 12-8-2 overall record and a 5-2-1 record inside the Big South Conference. The Chanticleers won the Big South Tournament and upset top-seeded High Point in the championship game to earn a berth in the NCAA College Cup for the eighth time in school history.
Russell and the Coastal defense allowed just one goal of the course of the three games at the Big South Tournament, and Russell was one of four Chanticleers to be selected to the Big South All-Tournament Team.
Coastal went on to face No. 24 Duke in the opening round of the NCAA College Cup and led 1-0 with 15 minutes to play, but the Blue Devils struck for two goals over the next seven minutes to ultimately eliminate the Chants from the tournament.
During the regular season, Russell anchored a Coastal back line that ranked third in the conference in goals allowed (25) and goals against average (1.08) and was second with eight shutouts. In addition, only one team in the Big South managed to score more than one goal on the Chant defense.
Russell started all 21 games for the Chants this season and finished the year with one point on one assist. He was selected to the All-Big South first team as a defender and was also named to the All-Academic Team.
It's the second straight season that Russell has been named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Team, as he earned third team accolades a year ago as a junior.
