ROCK HILL, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina University women's basketball team couldn't recover after a mid-second half Winthrop run and fell 47-39 in the Winthrop Coliseum on Monday, March 1. The Chanticleers fell to 15-11 on the season and 6-8 in the Big South Conference, as the Eagles improved to 12-16 and 6-8 in the league. The teams are now tied for fifth place in the conference.
The teams exchanged baskets to start the game until Winthrop's Shanice Cole started a 8-0 Eagle run, putting the Eagles up 11-5 with 14:36 left in the first half. The Chanticleers battled back to tie the game up at 15, as junior Sydnei Moss hit a three and was fouled to make a four-point play with 7:09 remaining. The four-point play started a 9-2 run, giving the Chants a three-point lead, 20-17, with 2:59 remaining in the half. Senior Amanda Stull came out of the locker and knocked down a three pointer on the Chants' second possession to tie the game up at 26 with 18:51 left in the game. The Chanticleers held close and trailed by one at 34-33 on a jumper by sophomore Olivia Irick with just over 10 minutes to play. However, Coastal's shooting was cold during an almost 18-minute span, as that would be its only field goal in that time. Winthrop capitalized, going on a 12-1 run over 7:10 to take its largest lead of the game at 46-34 with a little more than three minutes to play. The Chanticleers made a late 5-0 run to close the gap to 46-39 with 52 seconds ticking on the clock, but couldn't capitalize on missed Eagles free-throws, missing five shots in the final minute to give Winthrop with the win.
Coastal shot just 14.8 percent (4-for-27) from the field in the second half and 26.5 percent (13-for-49) for the game. Winthrop shot 41.9 percent (18-for-43) from the field. The Eagles had 24 points in the paint where the Chanticleers only tallied eight points. Winthrop also outrebounded Coastal, 30-26.
