Final Stats vs. UNC Greensboro
The Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team did not drop a single set in the 7-0 victory at Winston-Salem State at the WSSU Tennis Complex, but fell to UNC Greensboro 4-3 in the second match of the day at UNCG Tennis Courts. The Chanticleers improved to 11-5 in the season.
In the first match of the day against Winston-Salem, the Chants swept all three doubles, winning the point. The sixth-ranked doubles team in the region of senior Ernesto Ramos and junior Alex Funkhouser defeated Brian Coxton and Ian Hunter 8-1. Junior Matt Gordon and senior Dmitry Vlaskin were paired together the first time this year as they shut out Troy Moore and Mason King, 8-0 in No. 2 doubles. Senior Plamen Tzvetkov and Dorian Sovic topped Antentor Hinton and Joab Odera 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.
The Chanticleers continued to dominate in singles, as Vlaskin topped Coxton, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 position and Gordon beat Hunter 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Funkhouser improved to 12-1 this season as he topped Moore, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Ramos conquered Odera 6-1, 6-2, while Sovic followed in No. 5 singles defeating Hinton also 6-1, 6-2. Completing the sweep, Tzvetkov beat King 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 position.
In the second match of the day versus UNC Greensboro, Coastal took an early lead as they won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. The No. 2 team of Gordon and Vlaskin defeated Kyle Eddins and John Williams 8-2, while the No. 3 team of Ramos and Sovic earned an 8-3 victory over Yaroslav Lits and Timion Mellis.
The Chants continued their success in singles as Gordon defeated Arsel Kumdereli, 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 spot, and After losing the first set, Tzvetkov overcame Eddins, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in No. 6 singles. The Spartans rallied as they took the next three straight-sets in the No. 1, 4, 5 positions, tying the match up at three. It all came down to Funkhouser and Litus in the No. 3 spots. Funkhouser took the first set 4-6, but fell short in the second set, 7-6 (2). Titus wore Funkhouser out in the final set as he clinched the match with a 6-4 set-win.
The Chanticleers continue to on their road swing as they travel to East Carolina on Sunday, March 21 at noon.
