Baseball's Gilmore, Hessler Picked in MLB Draft

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina University baseball players Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) and Keith Hessler (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, it was announced today. Gilmore was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 25th round while Hessler was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 28th round.

Gilmore, an outfielder, is hitting .341 with 21 doubles, 12 home runs and 54 RBI for the Chanticleers this season. Gilmore has a .613 slugging percentage and is 10-for-16 in stolen bases. Gilmore was named to the All-Big South Tournament team and was 4-for-5 with five RBI in the Myrtle Beach Regional win over Stony Brook June 6. Gilmore has a career .301 batting average with 23 home runs.

Hessler, a lefthanded pitcher, is 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in 15 appearances this season. He has 25 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched and had a save in the win over Liberty May 15. He struck out four June 5 against the College of Charleston in the Myrtle Beach regional. Hessler also struck out five in 1.2 innings of work at Clemson March 31.

Coastal Carolina hosts South Carolina in the NCAA Myrtle Beach Super Regional Saturday, June 12 at 12 p.m.
