Coastal Blanks George Washington For Third Straight Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ross Kelly scored two goals and Coastal Carolina picked up its third straight victory with a 4-0 shutout of George Washington Friday afternoon from the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
It was the highest scoring output by the Chanticleers since Coastal scored four goals in a 4-2 win over Presbyterian in 2008.
Freshman Sebastian Bahos scored his first collegiate goal in the 25th minute to put the Chanticleers up 1-0. Sophomore Leo Mukofsky picked up his second assist of the season on a cross from the right side. Bahos settled the cross and beat George Washington keeper Jake Davis with a shot to the back post.
Coastal (3-2-0) struck just over eight minutes later when Ross Kelly scored his second goal in as many games with a header in the 33rd minute. Sophomore Luis Faz sent a cross into the Colonel box where Kelly delivered a strike into the back of the net.
The Chanticleers added another goal minutes into the second half on Justin Portillo's first career goal in the 47th minute. Mukofsky tallied his second assist of the game after Portillo fired a left-footed shot from 30 yards out into the right corner of the goal.
Kelly upped his season goal total to three with another header in the 81st minute off a corner kick from Portillo. It was the second straight game Kelly and Portillo hooked up for a goal. as the duo accomplished the same feat Sept. 12 in double overtime to give the Chants a thrilling 1-0 win over Wofford in the CCU/Adidas Invitational.
"I think we are continuing to work on how we need to create attacking and scoring opportunities this year," head coach Shaun Docking said. "Today was a good day for our guys, and I am pleased with how we are coming together offensively."
Junior keeper Scott Angevine recorded four saves en route to his third consecutive shutout and has not yielded a goal in his last 305:44 on the pitch.
"Scott has done a fantastic job for us all year long and he is really growing up and maturing as a keeper and a leader," Docking said. "He understands how important his play is in increasing our chances for a bid to the NCAA Tournament. He continues to work very hard in training and with the little things on and off the field, and I am very excited because I think it's really going to pay dividends."
Coastal returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Chanticleers travel to Elon, N.C., to take on Elon from Rudd Field.
