Chelsy Kimes Talks About Becoming All-Time Kills Leader at Coastal
CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team stepped out of conference play for a mid-week match, blanking UNC Wilmington 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 26-24) on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers improve to 8-8 overall while the Seahawks fall to 5-10 overall.
Prior to the start of the match, Coastal Carolina Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek and Head Coach Kristen Bauer recognized senior Chelsy Kimes for becoming the all-time leader in kills at Coastal. She broke the record Sept. 25 in the fourth set against UNC Asheville. Going into the match, Chelsy needed just 21 kills to become the leader and finished the match with a season-high 25 kills. She surpassed Katherine Jensen-Spencer, who's held Coastal's kill record with 1,568 since 2005.
The Chanticleers started set one strong with a 9-3 run, positioning themselves for a 25-18 win. Senior Megan Bickford and junior Erika Lightsey each tallied four kills while freshman Lauren Alejo led the team with 10 assists. The team had an attack percentage of .542 and committed only three errors during the set.
The Chanticleers were down 3-5 in the early goings of set two, but went on an eight point run to take the lead. After holding the Seahawks to a team attack percentage of -.119, the Chanticleers won the set 25-15. Kimes registered five kills for Coastal Carolina, and freshman Lindsay Gill posted eight digs.
Set three saw a battle between Coastal and UNC Wilmington with 11 ties and five lead changes. The final lead change came when the Chanticleers went on a 4-0 run to take a 25-24 point lead. Kimes finished the match with a match-point kill, giving her 10 for the set and 17 total on the night. Lightsey tallied seven digs during the set, and Alejo added 10 assists, giving her 25 for the match.
Coastal will return to action again Friday, October 1 in Kimbel Arena against Gardner-Webb University. The match is set to begin at 7:00pm.
