Final Stats

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team dropped its first match of the Hokie Invitiational 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-16) to tournament host Virginia Tech on Friday, Sept. 3 at Cassell Coliseum. The Chanticleers fall to 0-4 overall while the Hokies improved to 3-1.

Senior Chelsy Kimes led the team with 12 kills and added 16 digs for her second double-double of the season. Senior Megan Bickford contributed with six kills and three blocks while junior Kelsie Mauck dished out 21 assists.

In the first set, it was all Virginia Tech as the Hokies went out to an early 12-4 lead. Coastal tried to get something started down 22-8, going on a 8-2 run of its own, but Virginia Tech answered back by holding the Chants to a .024 team attack percentage compared to its own .256 and taking the first set.

Coastal came out on the attack in the second set, forcing 14 ties and nine lead changes. With the set tied at 24-all, the Chanticleers took the lead on a Hokie attack error, but Virginia Tech came to tie the set again at 25-all with a kill by Jennifer Wiker. The Hokies finished the set with back-to-back kills and took a two-set lead.

In the final set of the match, the Chants went out to a 2-1 lead, but the Hokies fought back to tie the match at 3-all. Following three more ties, Virginia Tech pulled away after going on a 12-3 run, giving the Hokies a 20-13 lead. Coastal won three more points before Virginia Tech won the match.

Coastal Carolina returns to the court tomorrow for day two of the Hokie Invitational, facing Jacksonville State at 10 a.m. and Long Island at 5 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
