Coastal's Improved Shooting Can't Stop High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Despite its best shooting performance of the Big South season, the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team was unable to escape High Point with a victory; falling to the Panthers 80-66 on Saturday, Jan. 22.

The defeat drops the Chanticleers to 6-11 (0-5, Big South) as the win improves High Point to 8-11 (2-3, Big South) overall.

High Point used a 51.6 shooting percentage to keep the Chanticleers out of the contest each time Coastal attempted to cut into the Panther's lead. High Point was also deadly from long range on the evening shooting 43.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Shamia Brown paced High Point in the contest with a game-high 18 points. Joining Brown in double figures for the Panthers were Cheyenne Parker and Jurica Hargraves with 13 points each along with LaTeisha Dean with 11.

Coastal Carolina shot a Big South season-high 47.4 percent from the floor as 27-of-57 shots found the bottom of the net.

The Chants were led by Sydnei Moss ' 11 points on 5-of-9 from the field. Taylor Epley contributed a career-high 10 points. Kayla Cook also scored 10 points for the fifth time in her young career. It was the first time since Dec. 30 at USC Upstate that three Chanticleers scored in double figures. Angelica Henry and Jessica Noll were near the ten point platform with nine points apiece.

High Point opened the first five minutes of the second half on a 12 -6 run to open up a 52-36 advantage on the Chanticleers. Over the next five minutes of play the two teams would exchange scores as High Point would answer each Chanticleer run with a big three pointer on the other end of the floor.

Throughout the remainder of the game the Chants would come no closer then 11 points of High Points lead.

In the first half, Coastal closed High Point's lead to one point at 12-11, before the Panthers would respond with an 18-8 run over the next six minutes of play to pull out an 11 point lead with 4:24 remaining in the period. Coastal was able to cut the High Point advantage down to six points with a 5-0 run before the Panthers' Erin Reynolds knocked down treys on back-to-back possessions to restore the home team's lead to double digits.

The two teams went to the locker rooms at the half with High Point holding a 40-30 lead on 58.6 percent shooting from the field. Coastal shot 41.4 percent in the half.

The Chanticleers stay on the road and will make its annual trip to Lynchburg, Va. to take on the Liberty Flames. The contest is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
