Coastal Volleyball Topped by Liberty

Lynchburg, Va. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team returned to Big South Conference play on Friday, as they played Liberty. The Chanticleers two game conference win streak was snapped following a 3-1 loss to the Flames, dropping the team to 8-14 on the season and to 2-4 in the Big South.

Liberty opened the match by taking a 12-3 lead, but Coastal used a late 8-0 run to take their second lead of the match at 19-18. Nine ties took place following that run by the Chanticleers before Coastal was able to close the set at 30-28 on an attack error by Liberty and a kill from sophomore Sam Skryd.

The Flames again came out strong in the second set but the Chanticleers fought back from being down three on several occasions to tie the game at 8-8. Coastal would take their first lead of the set a couple of points later, as junior Jamie DiMaggio and freshman Katie Martin each recorded a kill to put the score at 11-9. The score would go back and forth for much of the remainder of the set, before Liberty was able to tie the match up at 1-1 after the Chants recorded an attack error and the Flames tallied a kill to put the final score of the second set at 25-23.

Coastal struggled during the start of the third set, as Liberty built an 11-1 lead. The Chanticleers were unable to recover, as they were only able to get within eight points of Liberty during the set, falling 25-13

During the fourth set, the Chanticleers came out strong scoring the first four points on two kills by sophomore Kindra Bailey and a kill, as well as a service ace from freshman Lian Bernett. Liberty went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at five all and they took their first lead on the ensuing point. The Flames were unable to hold the lead for long, as Coastal scored the next four points to go ahead by three at 9-6. Liberty used an 8-1 run to pull away from Coastal and eventually take the set by a score of 25-18.

The Chanticleers finished the game with an attacking percentage of .109, while Liberty had a .199. Coastal had 77 digs on the evening compared to the Flames 67. Both teams had four service aces and 49 assists, but Liberty had the 53-30 advantage in kills and the 15-14 edge in blocks.

Bernett recorded 13 kills and two service aces in the match for the Chants. Sophomore Lindsay Gill tallied 23 digs on the evening, while Bailey had a team high five blocks. Skryd posted 38 assists and Martin had a .333 attacking percentage.

Leading the way for Liberty was Lillie Happel with 13 kills, Jade Craycraft who had 31 assists, Kelly Haseman posted 18 digs and Loren Thomas finished with four blocks.

Coastal will look to return to the win column, as they continue conference play Saturday with a match against Radford at 4:00 p.m. in Radford, Va.
