Final Stats

CONWAY - Shanika Maddox scored a career-high 19 points and Kira Carter pulled down a career-high 13 boards as the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat Coker, 63-53, on Wednesday evening at Kimbel Arena.

Maddox scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half, including 14 during a 19-8 Chanticleer run, and grabbed 12 rebounds to tally her second career double-double. The sophomore finished 9-of-19 from the field to lead all scorers. Carter's 13 boards nearly doubled her previous career-high of seven, which she achieved three times last season.

"Shanika really played well tonight," said head coach Alan LeForce. "She dominated both the offensive and defensive paint. I am happy to see her turn in such a great performance to lead the team to victory."

Coker jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the game as Kelley Godbout connected on a triple from the wing and Heidrun Kristmundsdottir drove the lane for an easy layup. Coastal answered back on its next three possessions as Taylor Epley, Angelica Henry and Olivia Irick combined to give the Chants a 7-5 lead with 16:19 to play in the half.

The teams exchanged baskets over the next nine minutes with neither able to take more than a two-point lead. On the heels of an 8-2 run, Coker regained its lead and pulled ahead by a four at 31-27. Irick then connected on a layup and two from the free-throw line to even the score at 31-all. Coker scored the final two points of the half at the stripe to take a 33-31 lead into the intermission.

The Cobras scored a quick basket to open the second half; however, Coastal's Maddox scored on both ends of an 11-3 run to give the Chants their largest lead at 42-37 with 15:23 to play.

The visitors would pull within one of the Chants at 44-43, but six consecutive points by Maddox finally broke the game open in Coastal's favor.

Coastal put the game away over the final minutes of the game with a 9-4 run. Over the stretch, Maddox connected on her final field goal of the game and the Chants knocked down seven free throws in the final 2:23 to account for the 63-53 final.

Joining Maddox in double-figures were Henry and Shatia Cole with 17 and 10 points, respectively, to mark the third time this season three Chanticleer scored 10-plus points.

Coker was led by Amber Lau's 13 points on 5-of-10 from the field along with Kelley Godbout's and Jasmine Alston's eight rebounds apiece.

At halftime Women in Philanthropy and Leadership for Coastal Carolina University (WIPL) honored Mrs. Shirley LeForce's unwavering support to women's athletics at Coastal Carolina. WIPL made the first gift towards women's athletics naming opportunities in the New Student Recreation and Convocation Center by naming the first women's basketball team locker in Mrs. LeForce's honor.

Coastal will have the next 11 days off before welcoming Converse to Kimbel Arena on Sunday, Dec. 11. Tip-off for the contest is slated for 2 p.m.
