CONWAY - The ninth-ranked Coastal Carolina men's soccer team travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on the UNC Asheville Bulldogs Thursday, Nov. 10, at 2:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Big South Tournament.
Coastal enters the tournament as the #1 seed as it won its 10th Big South regular season championship. The Chants finished the Big South regular season 9-0, the fist perfect season since 2007 when they posted a 6-0 record in league play.
As a team, Coastal Carolina finished the regular season ranked first in the NCAA in goals scored (57), goals per game (3.17), second in winning percentage (.889), 21st in team goals against average (.77), 49th in save percentage (.788) and 65th in shutout percentage (.33).
Individually, Ashton Bennett ranks first nationally in four offensive categories including total goals (21), goals per game (1.17), total points (48.0) and points per game (2.67). Bennett also ranks 57th with six assists on the year and 83rd in assists per game (.33).
Pedro Ribeiro ranks among the NCAA leaders as he finished 48th in total points (21), 55th in total goals (8), 58th in points per game (1.17), 68th in goals per game (.44) and 107th in total assists (5).
Goalkeeper Scott Angevine ranks 27th in the nation in goals against average (.816) and 80th in save percentage (.77).
Thursday's match will mark the 32nd meeting between Coastal and UNC Asheville. The Chants lead the overall series 26-4-1, with Coastal winning the last 10 meetings including a 3-0 win earlier this season in Asheville. The Chants hold a 5-0-1 record all-time against Asheville in the Big South Tournament. During the 1999 conference tournament held in Conway, UNC Asheville advanced past the Chanticleers in penalty kicks after remaining scoreless in regulation.
Last season, Coastal entered the Big South Tournament as the #2 seed and defeated VMI, Gardner-Webb and High Point to earn its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Chanticleers are currently ranked ninth by Soccer America, the highest regular season ranking since 2003 when they were ranked ninth by College Soccer News. The 2003 team finished 20-3 and won a pair of NCAA Tournament games before falling to overtime to Santa Clara in the third round of the tournament.
