CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team put together an impressive 27-0 run to overcome a two point deficit in the second half as the Chanticleers dispatched Converse 84-55 on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory Coastal improves to 6-1 on the season, including a perfect 5-0 mark in Kimbel Arena, as the loss sets Converse back to 1-6.
Kayla Cook, Olivia Irick, Shanika Maddox and AJ Jordan each scored in double-figures to mark the first time four Chants tallied 10-plus points since the quartet of Sydnei Moss, Amanda Stull, Kendra Reynolds and Irick did so against Charleston Southern on Feb. 13, 2010. Cook led the foursome with a career-high 17 points and Irick scored 16 while Maddox and Jordan each chipped in 13. Maddox also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season.
The Valkyries went 5-of-8 from the field in the first three minutes of the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 50-46. Coastal responded with an Irick three, a pair of Cook free throws and a Jordan jumper to regain the lead at 53-52 with 11:53 to play.
From that point on the Chanticleers dominated the game on both ends of the floor. Over the next 6:34, the Chants scored 23 additional unanswered points to complete the squads most impressive run of the season. A Kristan Sellars triple with 3:58 to play would be the only blemish as Coastal closed the final 13:37 of the game on a 35-3 run.
During the stretch, Cook scored 11 of her game-high 17 points as Jordan also poured in 11 to help Coastal shoot 41 percent from the floor and 30 percent from beyond the arc.
Both teams had trouble finding the bottom of the basket through the first ten minutes of the first half as the Chants could only muster a 14-12 advantage. However, a Shatia Cole old-fashioned three point play opened the scoring for both teams. Over the next 4:25, the Chants jumped out to a 32-21 lead as Irick scored six of her 13 first half points.
Converse would string together a 17-6 run over the final minutes of the half to knot the game at 38-all heading into the intermission.
As has been the case all season, Coastal continued to take advantage of its opponents' miscues converting 44 points off Converse turnovers. The Chants also continued their trend of dominating the low post by outscoring the Valkyries 44-26 in the paint.
Coastal finished the game shooting 43.2 percent from the floor as the Valkyries shot 43.5 percent. The Chants dominated the glass to finish with a 45-28 rebounding margin, including 25 defensive boards to Converse's two offensive rebounds.
The Chanticleers return to the hardwood with their annual appearance in the Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Sunday, Dec. 18. Tip-off with the South Carolina State Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m.
