Coastal Carolina 2012 Softball Schedule
CONWAY - Third year head coach Kelley Green announced the 2012 Coastal Carolina softball schedule on Wednesday. The Chanticleers host four tournaments, travel to Florida for two additional tournaments and play South Carolina, as well as College of Charleston in non-conference action.
"We are excited about our schedule this year. We will get the opportunity to play many teams that we have not faced before. It will be a great experience for our players and we are looking forward to stepping up to the challenge," said Green.
Coastal will play three teams that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament; two of those games will take place at the Florida State Tournament, Feb. 17-19, where the Chants will face Florida State and North Dakota State. Florida A&M, Mercer and Murray State will also take part in the tournament. The following weekend Coastal hosts the Chanticleer Challenge where they will play Sacred Heart, who also made the NCAA Tournament last season. Temple and IPFW will also compete in the event that will run from Friday, Feb. 24 through Sunday, Feb. 26.
The Chanticleers open up the season against George Washington, a team Coastal has never played before, in Coastal's annual Kickin' Chicken Classic on Saturday, Feb. 11. Georgia Southern, Marshall and George Mason are the other teams playing in the Kickin' Chicken Classic, which will run from Thursday, Feb. 10 through Sunday, Feb. 12.
Coastal hosts Saint Peter's, University of Nebraska-Omaha and Dartmouth in the Coastal Carolina Invitational starting on Friday, March 2-4. The Chanticleers will play each of the three teams for the first time in school history. The Chants host South Carolina in a double-header in their first non-tournament game on Wednesday, March 7 before hosting their final tournament, the Chanticleer Showdown, on March 9-11 featuring LaSalle, Hampton and North Carolina A&T.
The USF Under Armour Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. on March 16-18 will wrap up the Chants' tournament play. Coastal is slated to play Long Island, Hartford, Kent State, Boston University and Bryant over the three-day period.
The Chants open Big South action on the road against Presbyterian with a three-game series starting on March 24 following a double-header against College of Charleston on March 21.
A three game homestand against conference opponent Winthrop will conclude the Chanticleers' regular season.
Radford hosts the Big South Tournament this season, which will run from Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 12.
