CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team won the Kickin' Chicken Classic earning its first tournament win of the season with an 8-2 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday, Feb. 20. The Chanticleers improve to 5-4 on the season.
Coastal got on the board first, scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Jessie Winans started things off with a single to the shortstop and stole second. Freshman Brooke Donovan drove her home on a triple down the left field line, giving Coastal a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Chants took a 2-0 lead, scoring another run. Sophomore Jazmin Daigle led off the inning with a double down the left field line and freshman Racquel Cooke came in to pinch run. Cooke advanced to third on a ground out and junior Stacy Snelling reached first on an error, bringing home Cooke for a 2-0 Coastal lead.
Saint Joseph's tied the game up in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs. Shannon Kramer led off with a single over the pitcher's head and Juliette D'Ambrosio moved her to second a sacrifice bunt. Dana Parks drew a walk with two outs and Laura Cardone brought both D'Ambrosio and Parks home with a double down the left field line.
The game did not stay tied for long as Coastal's bats came alive, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Daigle led off with a triple down the right field line and sophomore Cacia Pierre followed with a home run over the centerfield fence for her first dinger of the season. Junior Chelsea Pineda singled to right center and Kara Vonatzski came in to pinch run. Vonatzski stole second and Snellings singled to right field and ran to second on a fielding error, scoring Vonatzski for a 5-2 Coastal lead. Senior Michelle Evans kept things going with no outs as she singled to the pitcher and freshman Nicole Saggiomo came in to pinch ran. Freshman Tamara Hawkins came in to pinch hit for senior Ashley Pisone and was intentionally walked to load the bases. Pisone returned to run for Hawkins and Donovan singled up the middle to score Snellings. Daigle earned two RBI after reaching first on an error at first, sending Saggiomo and Pisone home and giving Coastal an 8-2 lead.
The Hawks could not find their bats in the top of the seventh as the Chanticleers went on to win the game and finish the tournament 4-1.
Ashley Bagwell got her third start of the weekend and threw her third complete game. She allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six and improves to 4-1 overall.
The Coastal offense recorded 10 hits against the Hawks with seven Chants tallying hits, including Donovan and Daigle registering multiple hits.
The Chanticleers return to the field Feb. 25-27 for the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Coastal will face Rhode Island, Virginia Tech and Boston College.
