CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback to Radford Saturday afternoon from the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
Coastal Carolina (6-2) claimed the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead over the Highlanders. Radford took the first match at No. 1, but the Chanticleers answered by taking the final two matches to win the point.
Senior Alex Funkhouser and junior Danny Heidecker bested Joe Mills and Stijn Meulemans 8-4 at No. 2 before senior Dorian Sovic and sophomore Yusuke Kusuda clinched the point with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Igor Ogrizek and Nicholas Sayer.
Radford won the first two singles matches to take a 2-1 lead, but Alex Funkhouser tied the score 2-2 after beating Meulemans 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Highlanders, however, won the final three matches to give the Coastal Carolina its first home loss of the season.
"We took them to the limit today, but they demonstrated why they have won this conference so many times," Coastal Carolina head coach Chris Powers said. "I hope our guys realize how close we are to reaching new heights in our program. Today's battle definitely made me believe in this team."
Coastal Carolina returns to action March 6th when the Chanticleers host Furman at 1 p.m. from the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
