CONWAY - Coastal Carolina women's basketball was unable to upset the Big South leading Liberty Flames on Saturday as the Chanticleers fell 64-44 on senior day at Kimbel Arena.
Liberty (17-8, 12-1 Big South) was led by Devon Brown's game-high 15 point performance and Avery Warley's near double-double of 10 points and nine rebounds.
Coastal Carolina (9-17, 3-11 BSC) was led by Jessica Noll 's season-high 15 points. Noll also tied a Chanticleer season-high with four made triples. Sydnei Moss scored seven points and pulled down four boards in the contest.
Liberty controlled the low post in the game scoring 36 of its 64 points in the paint while forcing Coastal into an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers. The Flames also held a 39.7 to 28.3 edge in shooting percentage. Although both teams shot an equal 71.4 percent from the free throw line, Liberty held a significant advantage as the Flames shot 21 freebies to only seven for the Chants.
The Chanticleers played the Flames close in the opening four minutes of the game forcing four lead changes along the way. With the score tied with 16:37 to play in the opening half, Liberty pieced together a 29-9 run over the ensuing 13 minutes to take a 34-14 advantage. During the stretch Coastal found itself in foul trouble as the Chanticleers picked up eight team fouls to Liberty's none.
Coastal Carolina would bookend another Liberty run with a jumper by Moss and a trey by Noll through the final minutes of the half, but it was the Flames with the heavy lead entering the locker rooms with the score at 42-19.
After the intermission, Coastal Carolina played the Flames much tighter as the Chants would outscore Liberty 25-22 in the half. The Chants put together an 11-5 run to open the half led by two of Noll's five threes in the game to cut the Liberty lead to 19 at 49-30. However, the Chants would come no closer to the Liberty advantage as the two teams seemingly traded baskets throughout the remainder of the half.
Liberty's victory clinched at least a share of the Big South regular season championship for the Flames.
Prior to the start of the game seniors Sydnei Moss, Katie White, Jessica Noll, Katie Ahaus and Lauren Grochowski were honored for their accomplishments and contributions to Chanticleer women's basketball.
The Chanticleers will play in Kimbel for the final time in program history on Monday, Feb. 28 as they host to High Point. Coastal Carolina will open the new 3,600 seat Convocation Center next fall.
