Final Stats
CONWAY - In another pitcher's duel for Coastal Carolina --a game that lasted just 1:53, the 24th-ranked Chanticleers got an RBI single from Hayes Orton in the fifth and Jordan Coons closed the game for a 4-3 over Notre Dame in the Caravelle Resort Classic, played at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
Orton, who was 3-for-4 with two doubles, accounted for all four Coastal Carolina runs, scoring twice and driving in two. His last RBI came in the fifth. With the game tied, left fielder Jacob May walked, stole second and scored on Orton's two-out single to put CCU up 4-3. From that point, Coons came out of the Chanticleer bullpen to face the minimum over the final four innings to earn his second save of the season. Overall, Coons allowed one hit and struck out six.
Redshirt freshman Stefan del Pino (3-0) got the win. He allowed three, four hits and two walks. Bolstering Coastal's offense was Tommy La Stella, who had two hits and two RBI.
Notre Dame got on the scoreboard with a single tally in the first. With runners on first and second and two outs, Trey Mancini doubled off the center field wall to score Herman Petzold, who reached after being hit by a pitch. On the play Eric Jagielo tried to score from first, but was cut down at the plate on a Daniel Bowman-to-Taylor Motter-to-John Findanza play at the plate for the final out.
Coastal answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first. Scott Woodward walked and scored on a Orton double to left. The was a play at the plate, but the catcher had the ball come loose when Woodward came home. La Stella followed with an RBI double to right-center.
The Chants padded their lead with a run in the third, making the score 3-1. With two outs, Orton doubled and scored on La Stella's RBI single up the middle.
The Fighting Irish tied the game, at 3-3, in the top of the fourth. With one out, Mancini singled to start the frame and Matt Scioscia followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. After a punt moved up Scioscia, Charlie Markson brought Mancini and Scioscia home with a two-run double down the left-field line.
Notre Dame's Cole Johnson (1-3) was the tough-luck loser. He allowed five hits and four runs over. 7.2 innings while striking out seven.
