Softball Sweeps UNC Wilmington

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team swept UNC Wilmington in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 19, winning 3-0 in game one and 9-0 in game two at the CCU Softball Field. The Chanticleers improve to 19-26 overall while the Seahawks fall to 11-36.

In game one, Coastal went out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brooke Donovan led off with a double down the right field line and Jessie Winans drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Chelsea Pineda advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Jazmin Daigle singled through the left side to bring home Donovan. Winans scored on a throwing error to third by the catcher for a 2-0 Chanticleer lead.

The Seahawks recorded their first hit of the game in the third inning with a triple by Katie Houmard, but UNC Wilmington could not capitalize and stranded her at third.

UNC Wilmington threatened to score in the top of the fifth loading the bases, but again came up scoreless as Ashley Bagwell recorded a strikeout for the final out of the inning.

The Chants added its final run of the game in the fifth inning. With two outs, Cacia Pierre doubled to centerfield, scoring Sarah Maples, who singled to centerfield for a 3-0 Coastal lead.

Ashley Bagwell threw her second shut out of the season, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out 10. She improves to 10-11 on the season. Samme Lisowsky took the loss for UNC Wilmington after giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out six.

In game two, the Chanticleers took another early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Donovan led off with a bunt to reach first and Winans sent her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pineda drove Donovan in with a double to left center and Daigle cleared on a homer to left center, giving Coastal a 3-0 lead.

In the third inning, Coastal scored its fourth run of the game. Daigle led off with a single up the middle and Courtney Howell came in to pinch run. Howell stole second and Pierre singled through the left side to send Howell home for a 4-0 lead.

The Chants bats came alive in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Olivia Piccirillo led off the inning with a single down the right field line and Donovan laid down a bunt to reach first and advance the runner. Winans followed with another bunt single to load the bases and Pineda reached first on a fielding error at shortstop, bringing Piccirillo home. After back-to-back ground balls that resulted in a fielder's choice and the runner being called out at home, Pierre cleared the bases with a grand slam down the right field line for a 9-0 lead to end the game after the fifth inning.

Katelin Edwards got the start in the circle for the Chants, allowing only two hits, both in the second inning. Edwards improves to 4-5 on the season. Amanda Davenport picked up the loss for the Seahawks, giving up nine runs on nine hits.

On the day, Donovan, Pierre and Maples all recorded two hits in one of the games while Daigle went 2-for-3 in both games of the doubleheader with at least one RBI.

The Chanticleers hit the road, traveling to Presbyterian College April 22-23 for a three-game Big South Conference series. The first game on Friday is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
