Softball Falls In Final Home Game to Liberty

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team was shut out 5-0 by Liberty in the final home game of the 2011 regular season on Sunday, May 8 at the CCU Softball Field. The Chanticleers fall to 23-31 overall and 7-11 in the Big South while Liberty improves to 26-27 and 11-7 in the league.

Prior to the game, the team recognized its four seniors, Olivia Williams, Katelin Edwards, Ashley Pisone and Michelle Evans.

Both teams were held scoreless except for the five-run sixth inning by Liberty which allowed them to take the final game of the series. Coastal recorded only two hits in the game, both doubles by Sarah Maples in the second and Chelsea Pineda in the sixth.

Sammi Shivock led off the sixth for Liberty with a double down the left field line. Kelly Strickland hit into a fielder's choice and Shivock was called out on the play. Sydnei Lester followed with a single through the left side and Keely McMillon loaded the bases on a single up the middle. Amber Depasquale drove in the first run of the inning on a single up the middle and Ashley Bensinger reached first on a fielding error at third and continued to second. Two runs came home on the Coastal error for a 3-0 Liberty lead. Jenny Law brought in the fourth run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Meredith Crisante singled through the left side, allowing the fifth run of the inning score.

Edwards started in the circle for the Chanticleers and took the loss, falling to 4-7 on the season. She pitched her fourth complete game, giving up five runs, one earned, on nine hits while striking out four.

Katrina Johnson earned the win for Liberty and moves to 13-12 overall. She allowed just two Chant hits while striking out six.

Both teams will head to the 2011 Big South Tournament, hosted by Winthrop May 12-14. The Chanticleers will find out their opponent either late Sunday or Monday.
