Chanticleers Test Top Ranked Tar Heels

Photo Gallery CONWAY - Coastal Carolina men's soccer team fell 2-0 at home in an exhibition to top ranked North Carolina on Friday, August 19.
For the first 45 minutes of play it was hard to discern who the No.1 team in the country was as the Chanticleers played an attack oriented style of soccer that kept the Tar Heels in their defensive third for the majority of the opening half.
Coastal nearly took an early 1-0 lead as the Chants mounted a break away in the opening minutes. Unfortunately the shot off the foot of newcomer Ricky Garbanzo sailed just wide. The Chants almost tallied another goal in the 20th minute as a loose ball was corralled inside the box and fired into the waiting arms of the North Carolina goalkeeper.
Senior goalkeeper Scott Angevinetallied two saves in the first half to take a clean sheet into the half.
North Carolina finally broke through in the 67th minute as Billy Schuler was able to control a loose ball in the box and slot it into the net past the Chanticleer keeper.
The Tar Heels tacked on an additional goal with just over a minute to play to account for the final 2-0 score.
"I thought our team played well in the first half and most of the second," said head coach Shaun Docking. "In the second half, we let North Carolina dictate play more than I would have liked. We are a young team right now and that showed as the match progressed. We have a long way to go to be the team we are capable of being, but tonight was a good step in that direction."
At final count North Carolina outshot the Chants 11-5 on the night and held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Coastal will open its regular season on Saturday, August 27 at home as hosts to UNC Charlotte at 7:30 p.m.
