CONWAY - First quarter touchdowns by Matt Hazel and Aramis Hillary were all Coastal Carolina needed to defeat Catawba 20-3 on Saturday evening at Brooks Stadium.
On the opening drive, Coastal forced an early punt, which Chanticleer sophomore Tyler McCarthy blocked and Mike McClure recovered on the Catawba 14. Coastal's drive stalled, but Grant Clayton was able to make a 26-yard field goal to give the Chants a 3-0 lead.
Coastal converted another turnover into points with 5:41 left in the first quarter. Jeffery Salley forced a fumble that Philip George recovered. Two plays later, Aramis Hillary hit a streaking Matt Hazel down the right sideline for a 52-yard touchdown.
Catawba got on the scoreboard with a 38-yard field goal from Thomas Trexler. The Indians were able to get into scoring position when quarterback Jacob Charest hit his brother Nate Charest for a short pass, which turned into a 42-yard gain.
Undaunted, Hillary marched the Chants back down the field thanks to a 17-yard pass to Jamie Childers, an 11-yard pass to Duran and a 24-yard pass to Duran to the Catawba four yard line. After two rushing attempts, Hillary dropped back to pass, scrambled and found paydirt with a three-yard rushing TD, putting the Chants up 17-3 with 49 ticks left in the first quarter.
The Indians also answered right back, getting to the Coastal 15. However, after a short loss on a run, Chris Thomas came through with a big sack, forcing a 50-yard field goal that sailed wide right. On the ensuing drive, a big gain by Travis Small was called back due to a penalty. The Chants, facing third-and-24, got a 21-yard gain from Bucky Kennedy on a screen pass. Coastal then converted the fourth down with a completion to DeMario Bennett. For the second consecutive week, Dushawn Davis made an acrobatic catch for a big gain, picking up 24 yards to the Catawba seven. The Indians defense forced a field goal and Clayton converted from 23 yards out for a 20-3 Chanticleer lead.
Inside two minutes left in the first half, a bad snap on a Coastal punt gave Catawba the ball on the CCU 21. Trexler came on with 12 seconds left in the half to attempt a 35-yard field goal. However, after several timeouts, Catawba decided to go for it only to have CCU senior linebacker Derrick Frasier deliver a big hit to force the turnover on downs and keep the score at 20-3 at the break.
In the third quarter, Coastal had turnovers just over a minute apart from each other. The first gave the Indians the ball on their own 16. The Chants would force a punt on the ensuing drive, but the Chants fumbled the ball on the return to give Catawba the ball on the CCU 48. Catawba worked its way to the Chant 13 before attempting an apparent field goal. The Indians tried a trick play, but Tre Henderson sniffed it out, forced a turnover on downs and kept the score 20-3.
The fourth quarter saw the two sides exchange punts on back-to-back possessions in the early portion of the frame. The Indians were able to muster an 11 play 45 yard drive on their second possession of the quarter that ended inside the Chanticleer 30. With Catawba facing a fourth and eight at the 28 yard line, Marcus Lott broke up a pass intended for Eric Morman to preserve the 20-3 final score.
Hillary finished the night 12-of-24 for 220 yards and a touchdown. The game was Hillary's first 200-yard passing performance of his career as the Chanticleer offense rolled up 308 total yards.
The Chants return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 as the guests of the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Ga.
