Volleyball Comes Up Short Against Iona

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team took part in their final match of the Coastal Carolina Classic on Saturday, Sept. 10 against Iona. The Chanticleers came into the match on a two game win streak, but the streak would end as the Gaels took the match 3-1.

Iona scored the first point of the match, but Coastal responded by scoring the next seven points and they would not look back from that point on although the Gaels made a run late in the set to pull within two. The Chanticleers were able to close the set out scoring the final three points on a kill by sophomore Meghan Laffin and two attack errors by Iona to win 25-20.

During the second set Iona built a four point lead, before the Chants were able to make it a one point game when the Gaels had a service error putting the score at 12-11. Coastal was unable to take the lead and Iona went on to tie the match up at one a piece with a 25-17 win in the second set.

The Gaels continued to carry the momentum into the third set, as they scored the first three points. Laffin pulled the Chants within two points by recording another kill to put the score at 4-2. Iona used a three point and a six point run to pull away from Coastal. Iona went on to take the set by a score of 25-11.

Coastal and Iona played well in the fourth set with the match going back and forth until Iona went on a six point run to take a 22-16 lead. The Chants responded with a 7-1 run to tie the game at 23-23. Neither team was able to pull away following the tie, until Kelsey Hess posted two kills and Katie Marabella was able to record a kill to take the set 32-30.

Laffin finished the match with 18 kills, while sophomore Lauren Alejo recorded 16 digs and sophomore Sam Skrydposted 42 assists, as well as four service aces.

Marabella had 10 kills and 10 digs on the afternoon for Iona. Kelsey Hess led the team in kills with 17, while Theresa Harvey had 26 digs. Alicja Pawelec ended the match with three blocks and three service aces. Caris Myles posted 44 assists.

Heather Feldman (Gardner-Webb), Theresa Harvey (Iona), Laffin, freshman Katie Martin, Amy Angelos (Bradley) and Madison Kamp (Bradley) were named to the Coastal Carolina Classic All-Tournament Team.

Coastal will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to take on UNC Wilmington at 6:00 p.m.
