DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Chanticleers opened play in their final regular season tournament on Friday by facing tournament host Davidson College and succumbed to the Wildcats by a score of 3-0. Coastal is 4-8 on the season following the loss.
Coastal opened the match by going on a 4-0 run, but Davidson countered with a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the match. Freshman Katie Martin tied the game up at five all on the ensuing point on a kill with sophomore Sam Skryd recording the assist. The set would see 13 additional ties before Davidson prevailed 26-24.
The Wildcats opened the second set by scoring the first two points, but their lead was quickly erased as Coastal tied the set on an error by Davidson and a kill by sophomore Kindra Bailey.
The Chanticleers kept the match close until Davidson used a couple of 3-0 runs to pull away and take the second set 25-19.
During the third set the Wildcats built a 9-1 lead and the Chanticleers were unable to recover, as Davidson won 26-16 to take the match.
Freshman Lian Bernett and sophomore Meghan Laffin each had seven kills in the match for Coastal Carolina. Leading the Chanticleers in digs was sophomore Lindsay Gill who recorded 12 on the evening. Martin led Coastal in blocks with two and Skryd had 25 assists.
Leading the Wildcats was Caroline Brown with 12 kills, 13 digs, three service aces and two blocks. Ariel Ley finished the match with 31 assists.
Coastal will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10:00 a.m. in the Davidson Tournament when they play Norfolk State. The Chanticleers will wrap up the tournament with a match against North Carolina A&T at 3:00 p.m.
