Final Stats

CONWAY - Playing in their first home match since they hosted the Coastal Carolina Classic on September 9-10, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team played the College of Charleston on Tuesday night. Although the Chanticleers won the first set they were unable to come away with the win falling 3-1 to go to 6-11 on the season, while remaining at 0-2 in the Big South.

Prior to the start of the match the Chanticleers honored faculty and staff who have played a significant role in their success at Coastal Carolina.

The first set was close until Coastal Carolina went on a five point run that put the score at 15-10. The Chanticleers then used a 4-1 run that was capped off with a kill by senior Erika Lightsey to take the set 25-18.

During the second set of play Coastal Carolina built a 10-5 lead, but the Cougars used a 5-1 run to eventually tie the score at 15-15. The College of Charleston took their first lead at 17-16 and built a four point lead, but the Chanticleers would pull within one late in the set on a kill by freshman Lian Bernett who put the score at 24-23. The Cougars were able snap the Chanticleers run and took the second set 25-23.

The College of Charleston opened the third set by going ahead 7-2. Coastal Carolina was able to come within two of the Cougars on a kill by sophomore Kindra Bailey, who put the score at 7-5. The Chanticleers were unable to get any closer as the College of Charleston took the third set 25-12.

Coastal Carolina had a tough start to the fourth set, as the Cougars went ahead 8-3, but the Chanticleers made a 5-1 run to pull within one point of the College of Charleston. The Chanticleers kept the fourth set close until the Cougars went on a 4-2 run to take the 25-21 win.

"We came out semi-strong tonight, but did not sustain. The College of Charleston had a lot of offense behind their setter and we were unable to stop those plays. I think if we could have blocked a couple of the setter's balls and dug a couple of more then we could have been more successful, but the Cougars just out-performed us in those areas tonight," said head coach Kristen Bauer.

Lightsey and Bernett each tallied 11 kills in the match for Coastal Carolina. Sophomore Lindsay Gill led the Chanticleers in digs with 22 and freshman Katie Martin posted three blocks. Sophomore Sam Skryd finished the match with 36 assists and three service aces.

Sloane White posted 16 kills and three service aces in the match for the Cougars, while Emily Shelton recorded 15 digs. Leading the College of Charleston in blocks was Sarah Havel who posted six blocks. Taeler Davis finished with 28 assists.

The Chanticleers will return to action on Friday, September 30 when they face Big South Conference opponent Campbell University at home at 7:00 p.m.
