James Madison Box Score / Lehigh Box Score
HARRISONBURG, VA. - Coastal Carolina dropped matches to James Madison University and Lehigh University Saturday, each by a score of 3-0 on Saturday, as part of the James Madison University Days Inn Invitational.
Sophomore Kindra Bailey was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts on the court. She had 24 kills, nine total blocks, one dig and one assist in the two days of action.
James Madison 3, Coastal Carolina 0
Senior Erika Lightsey led Coastal in kills and digs with eight and 11 respectively against James Madison. Senior Kelsie Mauckposted 28 assists.
The Chanticleers started the match strong, taking an early 4-0 lead. Coastal would hold the lead until James Madison went on a 3-0 run after tying the game 13-13 to take the 16-13 advantage. Coastal was only able to come within two points of the Dukes after that point and James Madison went on to take the first set 25-21.
The second set was close until James Madison was able to break away and build up a 17-13 lead. Coastal went on a 4-0 run to come within two points to put the score at 20-18. The Chanticleers were unable to make another run and the Dukes took the second set 25-19.
During the third set Coastal went ahead 8-5 after the set started off close. James Madison took their first lead of the third set at 10-9 and built a two point lead, but Coastal would comeback to tie the game 15-15 on a service ace and eventually took a 19-16 lead. James Madison tied the game for the eighth time at 19-19 on a service ace of their own. The Dukes scored the next five points to go ahead 24-19 on their way to a 25-20 win.
Natalie Abel recorded a double-double for the Dukes with 11 kills and 14 digs. Kelly Maguire also had 11 kills and also posted four total blocks. Holly Wall had five service aces and Kristie Richardson grabbed 24 assists.
Lehigh 3, Coastal Carolina 0
Later in the day, Coastal took an early 2-0 lead against Lehigh in the opening set following a kill by freshman Katie Martinand an error by the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh tied the game up at 4-4 and would take their first lead on the next point following a service error by Coastal. Bailey tied the game back up immediately, after recording a kill.
Lehigh eventually built an eight point lead, going ahead 18-10, but Coastal made it close late in the game after going on several runs to cut the Mountain Hawks lead down to two, putting the score at 23-21. Coastal was unable to come up with an additional run and Lehigh took the first set 25-21.
The second set was a tight match the entire time as neither team held a lead of more than two points. Lehigh was able to win the set 26-24 following two attack errors by the Chanticleers. The Mountain Hawks carried the momentum into the third set, as they built an early 8-1 lead. Coastal was unable to recover and Lehigh would take the set 25-12.
Sophomore Meghan Laffin tallied nine kills to lead the Chanticleers. Leading the team in digs was sophomore Lindsay Gill who accumulated 13. Martin, Bailey and freshman Taylor Staffordeach had four block assists for a total of two blocks. Mauck had two service aces and 27 aces.
Leading Lehigh was Angelika Kopacz who had 16 kills and 13 digs. Rachel Charles provided the Mountain Hawks with 14 digs and five service aces. Taylor Poole had a total of two and a half blocks. Jessica Kudirka recorded 29 assists in the match.
Coastal will next host Gardner-Webb on Friday, Sept. 9, at 10:00 a.m. in its first home match of the season, as part of the Coastal Carolina Classic. The Chanticleers will also play Bradley at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Also on Friday, Iona will take on Bradley at 12:00 p.m. and Gardner-Webb will play Iona at 4:00 p.m.
