CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team won its first match of the season against Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
The Chanticleers (1-0) defeated the Eagles 4-3 (0-2) in their first match of the year. "It's always nice to open up the season with a win, it gives us confidence and momentum to carry forward for our next match," said first year head coach Catherine Hewitt.
Coastal won four of the six singles matches with Diana Mortlock, Mikaela Kristofersson, Katie Fosnacht and Kourtney Kowal all victorious.
The doubles duo of Kowal and Maria Hesketh won the lone doubles match 8-4.
After falling down 1-0 in the doubles matches Coastal won the next three matches to take a 3-1 advantage. Georgia Southern won the next two matches to tie the score at 3-3. In the decisive game Mortlock lost her first set 3-6 but bounced back to win the next two 6-2 and 7-6 (6) to win the match for the Chanticleers.
The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m. to face USC Upstate.
