ROCK HILL - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team returned to the win column with a 3-2 victory on the road at Winthrop Friday evening. The Chants dropped a 3-2 decision to the Eagles earlier this season at home but were able to overcome a 2-1 deficit on the road to pick up their seventh Big South win of the season.
The win moves the Chants to 9-12 overall and 7-3 in BSC action. The Eagles fell to 11-14 overall and 5-5 in Big South play.
The Chants were led by freshman Gabriella Horvath who delivered 22 kills, eight digs, a service ace and a pair of blocks. Junior Kindra Bailey added 13 kills, four blocks and two service aces while hitting for a .308 average. Freshman Eszter Nagy contributed 11 kills and a team-high six blocks while hitting for a .333 average.
Junior Sam Skryd led the team with 21 digs while junior Lauren Alejo had 56 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Jenna Orner chipped in 15 digs.
The Chants won the opening set 25-20 before dropping the next two sets 25-17 and 25-22. Coastal picked up the win by taking the fourth set 25-23 and the fifth 15-12.
Coastal hit for a .204 average while the Eagles had a .192 clip. Coastal had eight service aces compared to Winthrop's six. Both teams had 75 digs while Winthrop won the block battle 13-11.
The Eagles were led by Rachel Lenz who had 17 kills while Catherine Brusie led the team with 20 digs.
Coastal will return to action tomorrow, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. as the Chants travel to Presbyterian for another key Big South match-up. The Chants and Blue Hose are currently tied for second in the Big South standings with just four conference matches left in the season.
The Eagles host Charleston Southern tomorrow with first serve set for 2 p.m.
