Box Score

Final Stats

CONWAY - After a doubleheader sweep Saturday, 24th-ranked Coastal Carolina let chances in the eighth and ninth inning slip away as Campbell held on for a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.

With the loss, Coastal had its eight-game win streak snapped and falls to 32-14 overall, 14-4 in the Big South, while Campbell improves to 34-14, 10-8. However, with the sweep Saturday, the Chanticleers have won each of their six Big South series and remain in first place in the league's standings.

The Camels received a career performance from starter Hector Cedano (2-1). The sophomore left-hander worked a career-best 7.1 innings. He scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Ryan Mattes pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his sixth save.

In the eighth inning, Coastal put runners on first and second with one out. Mattes would escape by getting a pop out and a ground out. In the ninth, Jacob May and Ted Blackman, who was 3-for-5, came through with two out singles. Daniel Bowman, who was 2-for-3, would earn his second intentional walk of the game to load the bases. Alex Buccilli worked the count full before fouling a pitch off. The next pitch, Mattes got Buccilli to fly out to center to end the contest.

Campbell got on the scoreboard first, scoring twice in the fourth. Jake Kirkland had a leadoff single and David Olson, who was 3-for-4, delivered with a double to center. Ben Fish followed with a ground ball to second, but a throwing error allowed Olson to score, which proved to be the game winner.

The Chants trimmed their deficit to one, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh as Tripp Martin hit a leadoff home run to straight away center field. It was the first round tripper for Martin this season and the third of the sophomore's career.

Coastal starter Javier Reynoso (2-2) was the tough-luck loser. He pitched a career-high 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and a walk with a strikeout. Ryan Connolly, Austin Kerr and Aaron Burke pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing two hits between them.

Coastal Carolina will continue its torrid pace, playing a total of eight games in nine days, when it travels to the University of Michigan for a pair of mid-week games. The Chants and Wolverines will play Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network and is set to start at 7 pm. Wednesday's game will not be televised and is set to begin at 6 pm.

Coastal returns to Conway on Thursday and will host Winthrop in a three-game series Friday-Sunday (May 11-13). It will mark the final home games of the 2012 season for Coastal as well as for seniors Daniel Bowman, Tucker Frawley and Rich Witten. It will also be the final three games at Watson Stadium in its current form as the facility will undergo a renovation keeping the Chants off campus for the 2013 season.
