COLUMBIA - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team went toe-to-toe with SEC member University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Wednesday night and fell 3-2. The Chants won the second and fourth sets while the Gamecocks took the first, third and fifth sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-13).
The loss drops CCU's record to 13-10 while South Carolina improves its record to 12-11.
Sophomore Eszter Nagy led the Chants attack with 17 kills and a .577 attack percentage. She added four blocks including one solo. Senior Kindra Bailey chipped in 10 kills and five blocks while classmate Meghan Laffin added nine kills and a pair of blocks. Freshman Miona Milovanovic came off the bench and provided a spark as she put down nine kills on just 19 total attacks for a .421 hitting percentage.
Redshirt junior Lindsay Gill led the team in digs with 20 while sophomore Gabriella Horvath added 13. Redshirt sophomore Lian Bernett was the final Chant with double-digit digs as she had 12. Senior Lauren Alejo dished out a team-high 41 assists while freshman Beatris Petelkova handed out 14 assists after the Chants switched to a 6-2 system midway through the match.
Juliette Thevenin led the Gamecocks with 25 kills while Darian Dozier added 10 kills and seven blocks.
The Gamecocks topped the Chants in hitting percentage (.201-.193), digs (80-65) and blocks (15-9).
The match was close the entire way with South Carolina scoring 109 total points and Coastal Carolina scoring 106.
In the previous eight meetings between the Chants and Gamecocks, CCU had won just one set. That victory came in a 3-1 loss back in 1992.
The Chants will return to action Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. as they host Presbyterian College. The Chants will honor their five seniors following the match.
