KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team opened up the Lady Vol Invitational with a 3-0 shutout of Jacksonville State University. Senior Kindra Bailey and sophomore Eszter Nagy combined for 22 of CCU's 42 kills and had just one error combined. As a duo they had a .525 hitting percentage to lead the team.
The win marked the third 3-0 victory this season for the Chants who are just 11 matches into their 2013 campaign. CCU had just four 3-0 victories in 2012. CCU improved to 6-5 on the season while the Gamecocks fell to 6-7.
Bailey finished with 11 kills on 22 total attempts and had one service ace. Nagy also had 11 kills with one error on 18 attempts. She added a solo block as well. Sophomore Gabriella Horvath came up just short of double figures with nine kills, seven digs, a solo block and three service aces.
Senior Lauren Alejo dished out a team-high 32 assists while picking up six digs. Redshirt junior Lindsay Gill led the team with 15 digs.
The Chants hit .259 as a team which was their second-best effort this season. CCU held the Gamecocks to a .207 hitting percentage.
The Gamecocks took a quick 2-0 lead to open the first set but the Chants stormed back with a 10-3 run powered by Bailey who had four kills in the effort. The Chants kept the Gamecocks at bay as they went on to win the set 25-17.
The second set saw the Chants jump out to a 7-2 lead that they would never relinquish as they cruised to a 25-20 victory.
The third set was the most competitive of the match as neither team gave an inch over the opening points. Neither team took more than a two-point lead over the opening 40 points of the third set. With the set tied at 20, the Chants began a 5-1 run that featured a pair of kills by redshirt sophomore Lian Bernett. CCU would win the set and match 25-21.
Coastal will return to action tomorrow, Sept. 21 as the Chants battle ACC foe Georgia Tech and SEC opponent Tennessee.
