CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team extended its winning streak to five games on Friday night, defeating the visiting Radford Highlanders 3-1 inside The HTC Center (25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18).
Sam Skryd had 28 assists during the match, bringing her career total to 1,673, seventh all-time in Coastal history.
The win improves the Chants' record to 15-4 overall, 5-1 in the Big South, while the Highlanders drop to 14-7, 4-2.
Coastal hit .143 as a team while holding Radford to .071. The Chants also won the battle at the net, totaling 10 team blocks compared to Radford's six.
Leah Hardeman led all players with 14 kills as the Chants finished with 49. Annayka Legros followed with 10, and Lian Bernett and Eszter Nagy finished with eight apiece.
Bernett additionally had 16 digs, and Jenna Orner closed the match leading Coastal with 22. Nagy defended the net well, blocking five Radford attacks. Legros finished on her heels with four blocks.
Megan Short and Rachel Wiechecki had 13 and 12 kills, respectively, for Radford. Jena Braden provided a match-high 36 assists, and Wiechecki led all players with 26 digs.
Hardeman's six kills and three digs propelled the Chants to a first-set victory. The Chants jumped out to an early 15-10 lead, but Radford managed to shorten the gap to three points late in the set. Leading 21-18, Coastal used two kills and two Radford attack errors to close out the set.
Coastal's defense was dominant in the second set as the Chants tallied five team blocks and held Radford to a -.038 hitting percentage. Legros led the Chants' efforts at the net with two solo blocks, while Nagy assisted on two others.
Radford responded in the third set with a .116 hitting percentage compared to Coastal's .067. The Highlander's tied the set at 15 apiece midway through, and then used a 5-1 run to build a sizeable lead and force Coastal to use a timeout. Coming out the break the Chants began to rally, but consecutive kills from Wiechecki helped close out the set.
Hardeman grabbed the opening point for Coastal in the fourth and the Chants never trailed for the remainder of the set, though the score was tied four times. The Chants used a five point streak on the serve of Orner to build a 14-9 lead, and never looked back as Coastal finished the set with a .136 hitting percentage and three blocks.
The Chants return to action on Saturday to take on first-place Liberty in a 2 pm match inside The HTC Center.
