CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team lost a 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 22-25, 19-25) decision to the first-place Liberty Flames Saturday inside The HTC Center. The loss snaps the Chanticleers' (15-5, 5-2) five-game winning streak, which had been active since Sept. 27, and extends the Flames' (20-5, 7-0) streak of consecutive wins to 11.
Leah Hardeman led all players in the match with 24 kills, a new career high for the freshman and the fourth time this season she has surpassed 20 kills in a match. Hardeman's final line also included a .404 hitting percentage, 11 digs, three blocks and an ace.
Lian Bernett also recorded a double-double for Coastal, finishing with 13 kills, 16 digs and a block. Sam Skryd's 49 assists and 12 digs made her the third Chant to record a double-double.
Eszter Nagy led all players with five blocks, and Jenna Orner's 26 digs were a match high.
Caroline Douglas paced the Flames with 22 kills at a .305 clip to go along with her 13 digs. Caila Stapleton led all players with 50 assists, while Kate Courson provided a team-high 14 digs for the Flames.
The Chants opened the match hitting .302 in the first set as Coastal jumped out to a quick 17-5 lead and forced Liberty to use a timeout. The Flames attempted a comeback late in the set, at one point closing the gap to just four points at 24-20, but a kill from Nagy finished off the game in the Chants' favor.
Midway through the second set the Chants' again held a sizeable lead, but the Flames were once again able to rally and evened the set at 14-14. Coastal continued to pressure, eventually holding set point with a 24-22 lead, but three attack errors allowed the Flames to take the set and even the match at 1-1.
The Flames, propelled by seven kills of Douglas, led for the entirety of the third set. Each team had three blocks in the set, but Liberty was provided the edge thanks to a .324 hitting percentage.
The fourth set was tied early before Liberty earned five straight points and took an 11-6 lead. The lead would hold up for the remainder of the game, though the Chants did bring the margin within one as the set was coming to a close.
As a team Coastal won the battle at the net with nine blocks to Liberty's four, but the Chants were outhit by the Flames .277 to .238.
Coastal returns to action on Tuesday when the Chants host in-state rival South Carolina for a 6 pm match inside The HTC Center.
