Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team overcame a three-point deficit late in the fourth set to close out a 3-1 win over Gardner-Webb in Big South action Friday night at Paul Porter Arena. After trading the first two games, the Chanticleers (17-5, 6-2) won sets three and four over the Runnin' Bulldogs (10-15, 3-4).
Friday night's win marked the 50th for head coach Jozsef Forman who, in just his third year at the helm of the Chanticleer volleyball program, is the fastest coach in Coastal history to reach that mark. Forman is also the only coach in Coastal history to have a .500 record or better in their first three seasons.
As a team Coastal hit .350, its second highest percentage in any match this season, while committing just 10 attacking errors, its lowest number in a four-set match this season. Three Chanticleers hit over .400, led by an impressive .419 from Katie Martin who had 15 kills and two errors on 31 attempts.
Martin's 15 kills were second only to Leah Hardeman, who earned her eighth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 18 digs. Lian Bernett finished with 10 kills at a .417 pace and nine digs, while Eszter Nagy hit .400 with seven kills and a block.
Sam Skryd provided 37 assists for the Chants and Jenna Orner tallied 25 digs, each a match high. Annayka Legros was exceptional on the defensive side, leading all players and tying her career-high with seven blocks.
Gardner-Webb was led offensively by Tyler Cockrell and Tyra Montour who each posted 12 kills. Heather Feldman had a team-high 31 assists, and Anna Pashkova led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 17 digs.
The first set saw Coastal hit .550 as the Chants put down 12 kills with just one error to top Gardner-Webb 25-13. The Chants could not keep up that momentum, however, as Gardner-Webb responded in the second game with 16 total kills and two blocks to edge Coastal 25-22.
The Chants returned to form in the third game, hitting .394 while holding the Bulldogs to .000. Martin led the set with four kills, followed by three apiece from Bernett, Hardeman and Nagy. Coastal totaled 14 kills and won the game 25-17.
The numbers once again favored Coastal in the fourth set, but the Bulldogs played tough and kept the game tight. The Chants led 13-12 before surrendering four straight points, and were forced to call a timeout. The halt to play worked in Coastal's favor as it grabbed the next four points to regain the lead. The slim cushion would be enough as Coastal closed out the final game 25-22.
The Chanticleers are back in action on Saturday, facing ninth-place UNC Asheville in a 2 p.m. match. That game can be viewed for free on the Big South network.
