Asheville, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team won its third straight match on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) sweep of the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.
The eighth sweep of the season for the Chanticleers, and the second this week, improves their record to 18-5, 7-2. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, drop to 5-19, 1-7.
The Chanticleers were propelled by a team hitting percentage of .250 and 11 team blocks, compared to a .107 percentage from UNCA and just four team blocks.
For the second straight match, sophomore Annayka Legros recorded seven blocks, matching her career-high. Eszter Nagy also played well at the net, recording four blocks. Offensively, Nagy led the Chants hitting .625 with five kills.
Freshman Leah Hardeman paced the Chants with nine kills, followed by eight from Lian Bernett and six from Katie Martin.
Sam Skryd finished with a team-high 18 assists, and Jenna Orner led all players with 16 digs.
Catherine Fischer recorded a match-high 13 kills for the Bulldogs, while Katie Davis led all players with 26 assists. Davis also had 15 digs, while Bryn Pfieffer had 12.
Coastal dropped the first two points of the first set, but responded by winning 10 of the next 12 to take a comfortable lead. The Chants then relied on a .409 hitting percentage and three kills apiece from Hardeman and Martin to close out the set by a sizeable 10-point margin.
Asheville played the Chants tighter in the second set as each team recorded three blocks, though Coastal held a slight advantage in hitting percentage. Coastal appeared to be in control late in the game with a 23-19 lead, but the Bulldogs rallied to win four of the next five points to bring UNCA within one and force Coastal to call a timeout. Coming out of the break, Legros recorded her third block of the set to win it for Coastal.
Skryd recorded an ace to begin the third game, and the Chants never fell behind as they finished the deciding set hitting .138 with five team blocks. Legros had four blocks in the set, Bernett led Coastal offensively with three kills, and Hardeman tallied a game-high seven kills.
Coastal remains on the road for two more matches, beginning with a 7 pm meeting at Winthrop on Friday.
