High Point, N.C. - Double-digit kills from
Leah Hardeman and
Eszter Nagy, as well as strong play off the bench from
Katie Martin, spurred Coastal Carolina to a 3-1, come-from-behind victory against Big South opponent High Point on Friday night inside the Millis Center.
The conference win is the second this season, first on the road, for the Chanticleers (12-4, 2-1). The Panthers (6-9, 0-2) have yet to earn their first conference victory.
Nagy led all players with 12 kills, while posting a .364 hitting percentage and recording two blocks. Hardeman tallied 11 kills, eight digs and two aces.
Sam Skryd's passing was a major reason for Coastal's offensive success as the senior setter dished out 42 assists and recorded 13 digs for her team-leading seventh double-double of the season.
Jenna Orner turned in a solid performance on Coastal's back line with a match-high 20 digs and five assists.
Chelsea Davis led the Panthers with 11 kills and seven digs. Wavie Chin's team-high 18 digs were followed by 10 apiece from Gabi Mirand and Haley Barnes. Savannah Angel led High Point's net defense with three blocks, a match high.
The Chants found themselves in an early hole, losing the first set (25-18) and the services of sophomore Annayka Legros, who was sidelined midway through the second. Despite her early exit, Legros managed to put away eight kills while leading the team with a .500 hitting percentage.
Martin came off the bench to replace Legros, and Coastal's attack didn't miss a beat as the Chants won the second game 25-9, the largest margin of victory in a set for Coastal this season.
Martin continued to play well for the remainder of the match, finishing with nine kills, a .444 hitting percentage, eight digs and two blocks.
The Chants' defense remained solid in the third set, holding High Point to a .065 hitting percentage. Martin and Nagy each had four kills in the set. Coastal held a slim 20-18 lead late in the game, but earned four straight points on the serve of Hardeman. The Panthers made a brief comeback attempt, but were stopped short as Martin and Lian Bernett blocked a Barnes attack to close out the set.
The fourth set was all Coastal once again as the Chants outhit High Point .500-.062, and had a .84 sideout percentage. Nagy led the way with five kills and a block, while Orner's five digs gave the Chants the defensive advantage.
The Coastal volleyball team returns to the court tomorrow as they travel to Campbell to take on the Fighting Camels in a 4 pm match.
