Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's volleyball team lost its second match to Winthrop this season, falling in four sets on Friday night at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Chanticleers fall to 18-6, 7-3 with the loss, while Winthrop improves its record to 16-10, 6-4.
Coastal hit .188 to Winthrop's .153, and won the battle at the net 13 blocks to nine, but the Eagles took a 54-45 advantage kills.
Coastal's Leah Hardeman and Winthrop's Rachel Lenz tied for the match-lead in kills with 14 apiece. Sam Skryd led all players in assists with 28, while Lian Bernett recorded a match-high seven blocks.
Annayka Legros posted a .571 hitting percentage, putting down 10 kills on 14 attempts with two errors.
Winthrop's Nikki Drost accounted for a match-high 15 points, tallying 13 kills, two block assists and one ace.
The Chants and Eagles were tied 21-21 late in the first set, but Winthrop used a four-point run to close out the game and take a 1-0 match lead. Two errors from Coastal, as well as kills from Drost and Lenz, helped the Eagles claim the final four points.
Coastal rebounded in the second set with a dominating performance, outhitting Winthrop .414-.128. Hardeman and Katie Martin each had four kills in the set, while Bernett recorded Coastal's two blocks. The game was tight early, but a 5-1 run by Coastal opened up the set and provided a cushion that would lead the Chants to a 25-16 win.
The third set saw Winthrop out-hit Coastal as each team tallied four blocks. Lenz led the way for the Eagles with six kills and two blocks. Once again the set was tied late at 18-18, but Winthrop scored six of the next eight points to take a 24-21 lead. A kill by Bernett brought the Chants within two points, but Brianna Gray tallied the final kill of the set to close out a 25-22 win for Winthrop.
Winthrop carried its momentum into the fourth set, hitting .219 and registering four blocks. The Eagles received five blocks from Drost, and three apiece from Gray and Lenz. Trailing by four, Coastal attempted a late comeback, but Winthrop shut the door on a kill from Gray, winning the final set 25-23.
The Chants return to action on Saturday with a 7 pm match at Presbyterian. Coastal swept the Blue Hose earlier this season when the teams met. That match also followed a four-set loss to Winthrop. Saturday's match will be streamed for free on the Big South Network.
