Chanticleers Shut Out Presbyterian for 4th Straight Win

Oct. 8, 2014

Final Stats

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina seniors accounted for all nine points as the Chanticleers blanked Presbyterian 3-0 Wednesday night to win their fourth straight game and remain perfect in Big South Conference play.

Shelby Evans tallied a goal and an assist, while Rylie Johnson and Christina Stern scored their first goals for the season as Coastal (7-5-1, 4-0-0) continued its best conference start since 2008.

Kacey Kelley dished out two assists in the victory, giving her 57 career points and moving her ahead of Kristina Fisher into fourth place on the program's all-time list. She trails only Bobbie Parsons, Blair Monroe and Ashleigh Gunning.

Becca Austin and Faith Farley again each played a half in goal and combined on their second straight shutout, needing to make just one save between them. Austin recorded that stop in the first half and notched the victory.

Coastal outshot Presbyterian (3-6-2, 0-3-2) 12-8 in a relatively defensive game, including 5-1 on attempts on goal.

The Chanticleers made the most of their opportunities, starting with Evans' goal in the 14th minute. Kelley sent a cross-field pass from the left wing that got past two Presbyterian defenders and Evans ran on to the ball in space in the right side of the box and calmly put a shot into the left corner for her second goal of the season and fourth of her career.

Presbyterian totaled five of its shots in the first half, but their only real scoring opportunity came early in the second as Kristen Peagler got loose in the left part of the box, but her attempt sailed wide.

Johnson then gave the Chants a two-goal lead in the 56th minute. Pressing up on the attack to the right of the box, she put a long shot on goal that went off the Blue Hose goalkeeper's hands and in for her fifth career tally.

Stern then capped the scoring in the 72nd minute, finishing a nice set up by Evans and Kelley. Evans won the ball on Coastal's defensive half and found Kelley with a pass in the middle. Kelley then sent a ball up the right side that Stern was able to run on to, make a couple dribbles and send her shot into the left corner. It was the seventh of her career, but the first since October of 2012 after missing all of last season.

The Chanticleers have totaled 11 assists on their 10 goals in the first four conference games.

The 2008 squad won five straight to start its Big South schedule and this year's team will have a chance to match that on Saturday when they travel to Winthrop for a 1 p.m. game.
