CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team was one of 279 teams to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 academic year.
To qualify for the award, teams must post a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the calendar year. Coastal Carolina earned the honor for the fifth time since 2009 and 11th overall under head coach Shaun Docking.
The Chanticleers' posted a 3.13 team GPA during the 2013-14 academic year. CCU was one of six Big South Conference institutions to earn the honor.
"Owning a team GPA above a 3.0 is an important standard of our program that our student-athletes strive for each season," said Docking. "With the numerous academic resources and support on the Coastal Carolina campus, I look for us to continue to receive this honor each year."
Leading the way academically for the Chanticleers in 2013-14 were NCSAA Scholar All-Americans Justin Portillo and Uchenna Uzo. Portillo picked up first team Scholar All-American honors after earning a second team nod in 2012. Uzo earned second team Scholar All-American honors with a 3.36 grade point average as an economics major.
The Coastal Carolina women's team also earned NSCAA All-Academic recognition, making Coastal Carolina one of only 188 schools across all divisions to have both its men's and women's program recognized.
