CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's volleyball team won its 20th match of the season on Friday evening at The HTC Center, sweeping Charleston Southern in three sets for the second time this year. It is the first time since 2009 that the Chanticleer volleyball team has reached 20 wins in a season.
The victory advances the Chants to 20-6 overall, 9-3 in the Big South, while dropping the Buccaneers to 11-20, 1-11.
Coastal's defense, which currently ranks second nationally in opponent hitting percentage, continued its stingy play, holding CSU to -.034 for the match. The Chants, meanwhile, hit .236 as a team while recording eight team blocks.
Leah Hardeman's 10 kills were a match high, and the freshman completed the double-double with 14 digs. Annayka Legros and Katie Martin each put down eight kills, while Eszter Nagy led the Chants hitting .400. Nagy also finished with a match-high four blocks.
Senior setter Sam Skryd provided 22 assists before being relieved by freshman Aleksandra Djuric, who finished with 15. Jenna Orner led the Chants in digs with 16.
The Bucs were paced offensively by Meredith Parrott and Connor Malone, who put down five kills and hit .273, respectively. Cassidy Greer finished with 11 assists, while Taylor Allman led all players with 19 digs.
The Chants came out of the gate sprinting, hitting .379 to cruise to a 25-9 win in the opening set. Hardeman found hardwood six times in the set, while Legros and Nagy each had two blocks. Coastal jumped out to an early 10-4 lead before earning 15 of the final 20 points to close out the set.
CSU's defense stiffened in the second set as the Bucs blocked four Coastal attempts and held the Chants to a .122 hitting percentage. Skryd served Coastal to the set's first seven points, forcing CSU to use an early timeout. The break slowed the Chants' attack, and the Bucs were able to bring the margin to within four points. Leading 15-11, the Chants received kills from five different hitters to close out the set 25-19.
CSU struck first in the third set, building a 4-0 lead on the serve of Greer. The Chants quickly tied the set at 6-6, and an attack error from Siraya Windsor gave Coastal a lead it would hold for the remainder of the game. Hardeman led Coastal with four kills as the Chants hit .250 as team in the final frame. Nagy, Legros and Djuric also recorded blocks in the set.
Coastal has two regular-season matches remaining in the 2014 schedule, both at home. The Chants host Campbell for a 6 pm match next Thursday, before closing the season with an 11:30 am match against High Point on Saturday. Saturday's match will also be Senior Day for the Chants.
