RADFORD, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team cruised to a 75-42 victory over Radford on Saturday afternoon as the Chanticleers held a wire-to-wire lead in their first Big South Conference game of the season.
With the win the Chants improve to 6-2 overall, 1-0 in conference play. The Highlanders, meanwhile, fall to 2-6 and remain winless in Big South games at 0-2.
Coastal's guards shouldered much of the workload as the Chants' starting three combined for 45 points, and Jas Adams added 12 off the bench. AJ Jordan led all players with 21 points, matching her 2014-15 season-high, and shot 76.9 percent from the floor converting 10 of her 13 attempts.
Ced Gibson finished with 13 points while leading Coastal with five assists and tying Jordan's steal total at four. Gibson also led Coastal in rebounding, grabbing eight of the Chants' 42. It was the first game this season that a Coastal player went without double-digit rebounds.
Stephanie Isaacs rounded out Coastal's double-digit scorers with 11 points. The junior guard led Coastal playing 28 minutes and added two rebounds, a steal and an assist to her final line.
For the second game this season the Chants kept all opposing players' scoring totals in the single-digits. Jordynn Gaymon led the way for the Highlanders with eight points, and added a team-high nine rebounds. Claudia Quevedo, Rachael Ross and Gaby Gilmore all finished with six points for Radford.
The Chants held the Highlanders scoreless for almost the first seven minutes of the game while putting up 12 points during that span. Coastal's backcourt led the way as Jordan and Gibson combined for 10 of those opening points. Gilmore gave Radford its first points with a 3-pointer at the 13:09 mark, the first of just two three's the Highlanders would hit in the opening frame.
The Chants shot 37.9 percent from the floor in the opening half, and won the battle on the boards with 27 rebounds to Radford's 17.
Coastal went into the locker room at the break with a 32-17 lead after Adams closed the first half with seven straight points in the final 3:13.
Coming out of the break the Chants outscored the Highlanders 13-6 in the half's first five minutes. Jordan was responsible for eight of Coastal's points during that stretch, while Isaacs hit a 3-pointer and Gibson added a layup on a fast break. Jordan added seven more points to her second-half total before sitting out the game's final minutes. Isaacs played the entirety of the second half, during which time she scored all 11 of her points.
Coastal closed the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor, and 31.3 percent from the beyond the arc. The Chants also shot 70 percent from the line, converting 14 of their 20 free throw attempts.
The Chanticleers return home on Wednesday to host North Carolina Central for their final home game of the season against a non-conference opponent. Opening tip at The HTC Center is set for 7 pm.
